Ability Cards

Postby mikewelch8 » Sat Jun 23, 2012 10:17 pm

The ability, secret, and information cards are printed only in the Character Booklets, and in such a way that cutting them out is impossible. Should I reprint these onto cardstock so that a character can easily display one card without revealing the rest of their cards, and without having to drag out their whole booklet? Also, the gesture of displaying your booklet to another character may be obvious to other players to the point where they'll know what is going on.

Thanks

Hi there,

We used to lay out these things on separate cards, but we got a lot of complaints about people dropping them, getting them mixed up, etc. So we started integrating them into the booklets as you now see. There are pros and cons either way, but we did a big survey of users at the time and most people felt in-the-booklet was best, so that's what we've stuck with.

The player can display just one card by folding the booklet so only that one is showing, or covering the others with their other hand. It is a bit fiddly, sorry about that, but it's doable once you get used to the idea.

You're right of course that the gesture of displaying is obvious to observers. But they won't be able to tell what is being shown -- it could be an ability, or a secret, or information, etc -- so they don't really gain anything from seeing what has happened. There'll be a lot of it going on, so spotting such incidents taking place doesn't really tell you much.

But if you feel that separate cards would work better for your group, then by all means do print them separately on cardstock: that will work fine too.

best wishes,

Mo

We left the cards in the booklet and it worked quite well. Everyone was so involved in their own interactions, and the ability use was so frequent that it didn't matter at all that other people could see. Less stuff for a person to have to hang onto was almost certainly better. Thanks for the advice, and for the great game!

That's great to hear! – really glad that everyone enjoyed it, and that the booklets were OK for them. Thanks for letting us know!
