Scene of the Crime: Playtesters needed!

Welcome to Scene of the Crime

Welcome to the Freeform Games murder mystery newsletter.

This time, we are looking for playtesters, updating Lei’d to Rest, sharing an idea for creating player scoresheets, talking about our catalog, and including a 20% discount code.

Enjoy!

Looking for playtesters – Death at the Derby

Cover to Death at the Derby

Our next game will be Death at the Derby and we’re looking for playtesters.

Death at the Derby is a horse-racing themed game for 20-32 players and one or two hosts. It’s more complicated than many of our games (it’s probably similar to A Speakeasy Murder in complexity), so we recommend two hosts. (If you do host it on your own, we’d be interested to hear how that went.)

Death at the Derby is rated 18+ as it contains adult themes and references to drug smuggling and serial infidelity.

Here’s the summary:

Welcome to the Olaf Downs racecourse and the annual “Trek for the Tulips” race on our Manitou Mile track. Jockeys, celebrities, press, and starstruck fans rubbed elbows at a celebration banquet last night, catered by celebrity guest chef Ole Lutefisk.

Last year’s winner and favored jockey, Billy Cobbler, was alive and well at dinner last night but was found dead in his horse’s stall this morning. Police are treating Billy’s death as murder—was someone trying to rig the race?

But don’t let that worry you! Enjoy the fabulous Tulip Topper hat competition or our new signature drink, the Tulip Julep. And while you’re here, feel free to place a bet!

If you’re interested in playtesting, we need feedback back by the end of August 2025.

We are looking for ten groups to playtest Death at the Derby and give us feedback – and we’re looking for photos that we can use to promote the game. (Don’t forget to check your friends are happy for you to share with us!)

Please complete this form if you would like to playtest Death at the Derby.

We’ll keep the form open until Friday 27th June, and then we’ll choose ten people from those who have signed up.

Character scoresheets

Reviewing the scoresheets

Giancarlo Benedetti shared with us an idea for creating a results page for each player that he uses to calculate how everyone did.

Our catalog of games

Extract from the Freeform Games catalog

Long-term customers of ours will remember that we used to have a page on our website that listed all of our games, along with their player numbers, suggested age rating, features and a summary.

We’ve reinstated that – but this time as a pdf.

How you can help

If you’ve enjoyed our games, you can help us by:

  • Writing a review – either on our game pages or on Trustpilot. (If you have a lot of photos you’d like to share, get in touch with us here.)
  • Link to us on your blog or website or social feed.
  • Mention us on your socials: Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, Pinterest – tell everyone you’ve played our games!

And remember, we’re also on Facebook and Instagram (although we’re better at Facebook than Instagram). Like our pages to hear the latest news.

Thank you for reading!

As a thank you for reading our newsletter, here’s a 20% coupon for your next purchase: JUNE25

(This coupon is valid until June 30, 2025, and applies to a single purchase, covering all games in your basket. Please note that it excludes our commercial license.)

And that’s it from us this time!
