Building excitement before your party: Using WhatsApp to prepare your guests
One challenge when hosting a murder mystery party is getting guests up to speed without overwhelming them on the day. A little preparation beforehand can make the game run more smoothly and help everyone arrive feeling excited rather than confused.
Lara used WhatsApp to gradually share information leading up to her party.
I created a WhatsApp group a week before and posted general info every second day to give them background info and what to expect. That way, I didn’t have to put the repetitive contents from the character packs into their envelopes, giving them less to read on the day.

Two effects: building interest and reducing printing
This had two effects.
First, it meant less printing as Lara didn’t need to include things like the background in the character packs. (We imagine she had a couple of copies for the game itself, perhaps posted where everyone can see them.)
Second, the intermittent feed of information helps build interest in the party without overwhelming guests.
You could also share the common sections from the character booklet, such as the introductory text, cast list and the general rules. (Although, because they are embedded in the character booklets, we’d still print those.)
And of course, you don’t have to use WhatsApp!
Boosting engagement and reducing confusion
Not every group needs the same level of preparation, but sharing key information before the event can be an easy way to boost engagement, reduce pre-game confusion and even save paper.
Whether you use WhatsApp, email or another messaging platform, a steady stream of updates helps guests become familiar with the setting, look forward to the event and arrive ready to play their part.
