Murder mystery games for teenagers
Looking for a murder mystery game for a teenage birthday party, Halloween party or other gathering? Our downloadable murder mystery games for teenagers give everyone their own character, secrets and objectives, creating an interactive party full of mystery, intrigue and fun.
Unlike scripted murder mysteries, our games let players make their own decisions, investigate clues, form alliances and pursue their own goals. No one needs to learn lines or take turns reading from a script; everyone can get involved throughout the game.
We have murder mystery games suitable for younger teenagers aged 12 and up, as well as more mature mysteries for older teenagers.
Murder mystery games for ages 12+
These family-friendly murder mystery games suit players aged 12 and older. They feature murder, secrets, and intrigue, but avoid the more mature themes in some of our other games.
Way out West
Head for the Wild West, where cowboys, outlaws, gamblers and townsfolk have plenty of scores to settle.
Way out West is for 10-24 players and is an easy theme to dress for, with cowboy hats, bandanas and waistcoats.
Best for: Groups who enjoy energetic roleplaying and a Wild West atmosphere.
Hollywood Lies
Lights, camera, murder! Hollywood Lies is full of movie stars, ambition, rivalries and secrets.

A Dead Man’s Chest
Pirates, treasure, secrets and murder on the high seas!
A Dead Man’s Chest is for 12-16 players who enjoy swashbuckling adventures. Pirate costumes are easy to improvise, and a few nautical decorations can turn your home into a pirate hideout.
Best for: Pirate fans and adventurous teenage groups.
Murder mystery games for older teenagers (15+)
For older teenagers, we also have games featuring darker stories, more complicated relationships and more mature themes.
These games are generally suitable for ages 15 and up, but we recommend that parents and organisers check each game’s description to make sure it’s appropriate for their group.
(And just to be clear, the games listed above are also great for older teenagers and adults.)
A Haunting in Hartwick
A haunted house, weird science and restless spirits make A Haunting in Hartwick an excellent choice for a spooky teenage murder mystery.
A Haunting in Hartwick is for 11-13 players. We consider it suitable for ages 15+ because it contains adult themes (affairs, mental health, and references to bigamy) and supernatural elements.
Best for: Older teenagers who enjoy ghost stories and supernatural mysteries.
The Kiss of Death
Enter a world of Gothic horror, vampires and dark secrets in The Kiss of Death.
This atmospheric mystery is for 6-8 players and contains references to drugging, mental instability, and vampirism.

Murder on the Dancefloor
A murder mystery for 14-20 players with a lively party atmosphere – and a dance-off!
Murder on the Dancefloor contains teen romance, gang fights, and a teen pregnancy.
Best for: Older teenage groups looking for a contemporary party setting.
The Show Must Go On!
A theatrical murder mystery for 9-13 that can be played in an hour!
The Show Must Go On! takes place at audition night and contains references to cannabis (which is illegal in the UK).
Best for: If you are short of time as it only takes an hour to play.
Choosing the right murder mystery for teenagers
When choosing a teenage murder mystery party game, start with the number of players. Each game has a minimum and maximum number of characters, so make sure it can accommodate everyone you’re inviting.
Next, consider the group’s interests. Some teenagers will love a magical school, science-fiction conspiracy or Wild West adventure, while others may prefer Hollywood glamour, spies or supernatural horror.
Age suitability matters too. Our age recommendations primarily reflect the themes and content of each game, rather than how difficult it is to play. A confident group of younger teenagers may enjoy a game with complicated plots, while older teenagers can have just as much fun with a family-friendly mystery.
We recommend checking each game’s description and content guidance before choosing, particularly for mixed-age groups.
Hosting a murder mystery party for teenagers
Do teenagers need an adult host?
Teenagers can often manage much of a murder mystery themselves, particularly if they’re confident readers and enjoy roleplaying. However, having an adult available to help with the rules, timing and any questions can make the game run more smoothly.
Younger teenagers may appreciate more guidance, while experienced older players may need very little assistance.
What about shy or inexperienced players?
Not everyone needs to be a confident actor! Our murder mysteries aren’t theatrical performances, and there’s no script to memorise.
Players can get involved in different ways: investigating mysteries, sharing information, making deals, pursuing personal objectives or simply talking to other characters.
For a first game, it helps to give quieter players characters with clear objectives and encourage everyone to get involved.
How much preparation is needed?
Our games are supplied as digital downloads and include the materials needed to prepare and run the mystery.
As the organiser, you’ll need to read the host instructions, assign characters, distribute the appropriate information and prepare any handouts or props.
Costumes and decorations are optional, but they can make the party much more memorable. Encourage guests to dress for the setting – whether that’s Hollywood, the Wild West, a magical school or a haunted house.
How long does a teenage murder mystery party last?
While we recommend allowing at least three hours for the games, their actual depends on the players – and games with more players tend to take a little longer than smaller games.
Allow time for guests to arrive, get into character, play the mystery and discover what happened.
For younger or less experienced groups, it’s worth planning breaks and keeping an eye on the pace of the game. Check the individual game instructions for the recommended playing time.
