I played Pirate Island over the New Year with a group of 11 kids from 6 to 14, and it was fantastic, the most successful New Year’s Eve party we have ever had with such a mixed age group.”

How does Pirate Island work?

Pirate Island is for 6 to 32 kids of any gender aged eight and up. (You can play with younger pirates – but they may need adult help. You can also play with older pirates – they’ll probably have as much fun as the younger ones.)

Everyone is organized into ship crews who must work together to complete quests and win the pirate games. The crew with the most doubloons wins!

The step-by-step instructions explain which ships and which crewmembers to use, so you can tailor it to however many pirates are attending your party.

Pirate Island lasts about an hour and is ideal as part of a larger party – such as a birthday, Halloween or New Year’s Eve party. Two or three adults are needed to run the party, and someone must prepare everything beforehand.

“Thanks again for all of your help. We appreciate the excellent customer service you have given us – it is what makes all the difference!”

What else you’ll need for Pirate Island

When you buy our party game kit, the only extra thing you need is some pirate treasure. This could be plastic coins, poker chips, coloured plastic gems, or anything else the kids will enjoy using to represent money. How much you need depends on your party, but about 15 per child should be plenty. You will also need pens, rulers and other craft materials.

We also recommend awarding prizes to the best pirates – perhaps little treasure chests, costume items, or stuffed toy parrots or skulls – one prize for the overall best pirate crew and one for each of the four contests.

Apart from that, you’ll probably want pirate decor for the room where you’re having the party, pirate-suitable food, costumes and so on, like for any other kids’ party.

How does Pirate Island work? asked on 7 November 2022

Unlike most of our games, in Pirate Island the players form teams of pirates and must compete together to be the best pirate crew.

The person organizing the party runs the competitions and awards prizes – you might want more than one host, if you have a lot of players.

Is Pirate Island suitable for all-male or all-female groups? asked on 3 November 2022

Yes! None of the characters are gendered, so they can be played by anyone.

What does the host do? asked on 28 October 2022

Before the party, the host:

  • Buys the game and downloads the files.
  • Reads the instructions and other material (including character sheets) so that they have a good understanding of the game and how it works.
  • Sends out invitations.
  • Prints the character information and prepares the team envelopes.
  • Prints out other material that will be needed during the party.

The host might also be responsible for sorting out the venue and refreshments – or that may be done by others.

During the party, the host:

  • Meets and greets everyone.
  • Asks the players to form pirate crews, and gives them their team envelopes.
  • Reads the introduction and explains how the party works.
  • Adjudicates competitions.
  • Awards any prizes.

The host might also be involved in serving food and drinks – but it's often better if others are responsible for that.
